Do a little preparation to keep your heating system working efficiently during winter weather.
Gas and Propane Furnaces, Water Heaters, and High Efficiency Boilers
- Keep your exhaust and fresh air vents clear
- These are the PVC pipes that your furnaces use to vent exhaust and bring in fresh air to your furnace.
- Know where your furnace vents are outside and shovel the snow away from them if needed.
- If these vents are blocked with snow or ice, your furnace will not work

Important: if your furnace stops working, check the vent pipes outside, if they are blocked, remove snow away from vent pipes, turn power off to your furnace and then back on to restart.
Heat Pumps
- Remove any tree limbs or shrubbery away from around your unit
- 18″ clear away from the sides of the unit
- 4′ clear from above the fan outside
- Shovel any deep snow away from the condenser (be careful around the coil and lines going into your unit)
Other Important Tips
- Make sure your indoor air filter is clean and recently replaced
- If you have oil or propane, check your fuel levels!
