Natural Gas
- How it works: Piped directly to your home by a local utility company; gas is burned in a high-efficiency furnace.
- Why this works: Usually the cheapest and most efficient fossil-fuel option; burns cleanly with no on-site storage tank needed.
Electric Heat Pump
- How it works: Uses electricity to move heat from the outside air into your home. It provides both heating and cooling.
- Why it works: Extremely energy-efficient; emits a fraction of the greenhouse gases of oil furnaces; works well in mild climates.
Propane
- How it works: Stored in an outdoor tank and delivered by truck, burning cleanly in a high-efficiency furnace.
- Why it works: Burns cleaner and more efficiently (90%–98% AFUE) than oil; removes the risk of a leaking basement oil tank; can also power water heaters and backup generators.
